(ARA) – Wondering what to wear at the office as the temperature climbs this summer? Fashion experts at The Art Institutes have some words to live by when dressing for success at your workplace.

“There are many ways to incorporate summer’s hottest trends into your office wardrobe without compromising your professional credibility,” says Marlise Vance, senior instructor in Fashion Merchandising at The Art Institute of Ohio – Cincinnati. “Using color, accessories and patterns can bring a summer feel to your work ensembles, even if the pieces themselves are traditional office conservative. A bright tank or cami under a jacket, a colorful patterned skirt or fashion-forward shoes can make a big impact.”

“Black is never out of style,” says Stephanie Taylor, academic director of Fashion Marketing and Management at The Art Institute of Charlotte. “A great idea is to pair a black suit with fresh colors such as lime green, hot pink or yellow.”

Some of the hottest trends this summer include a more do-it-yourself kind of attitude. “The big trend this summer is that there is no big trend. Instead of going out and buying a trendy new outfit, recycle and reuse the clothes you do have,” says Taylor.

As part of this do-it-yourself kind of season, however, there are essentials every woman may want to purchase when dressing for the office.

“Accessories are an essential part of the dress code, and summer can be a good time to try a new scarf or bracelet,” says Thomas Liddy, apparel design instructor at The Art Institute of Portland.

Cardigans are another great buy.

“Women want to invest in a great cardigan this summer,” says Mike Watson, Fashion Marketing and Management instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte. “A cardigan is great because you can wear it over a sleeveless shirt or dress, and then take it off when you leave work.”

He adds, “If I had to tell women to buy one thing for the summer, I would tell them to buy a white skirt or pants.”

“Think about your overall look throughout the day,” says Patricia Crockett, Apparel Design instructor at The Art Institute of Portland. “If you choose to wear a lower-cut top or camisole underneath your blazer, ask yourself if you’ll really wear the blazer or sweater all day. If the answer is no, choose another top that will complement your outfit and look work-appropriate on its own.”

What’s underneath your outfit also is crucial to your being dressed for success.

“Appropriate undergarments are essential,” says Julie Hengle, academic director for the Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design programs at The Art Institute of Ohio – Cincinnati. “There is nothing less professional than an unsuitable foundation piece.”

Common sense goes a long way, she elaborates. “Though it should go without saying, it bears repeating and reemphasizing: There should never be an occasion in the workplace when your co-workers can discern anything about your underwear. If you want to be taken seriously and judged for your work, not your wardrobe, then make good choices in proper undergarments.”

“What you wear to the office in the summer should always be one step removed from what you wear to an after-work event such as a date or cocktail party,” says Vance. “That means there should be something you either add, such as trendy accessories like jewelry or shoes, or something you can remove, like a jacket or sweater.”

Along with the essential “Dos” come absolute “Don’ts.” According to the fashion experts at The Art Institutes, one should follow these rules in the office, no matter how high the temperature climbs outside:

* No tube tops or halter tops.

* No flip-flops or gladiator sandals.

* Never go braless and be careful not to show too much cleavage.

* No minis: Skirts should fall at or below the knee.

* Don’t go sleeveless — cover bare arms with that cardigan.

* If you wear open toe-shoes, make sure you have a pedicure.

* And, men: Never go sockless.

“Make sure skirts are office-appropriate, which includes length,” says Crockett. “Because women bare their legs in summer, skirts should be closer to the knee. In winter, skirts can be shorter because women wear dark hosiery underneath.”

For men, there also are appropriate ways to transition to warm weather summer attire.

“Men obviously have fewer options than women when it comes to changing their wardrobe for summer time.” Watson says. “But what they can do is change from dark, heavy clothes to light clothes. For more fashion-forward companies it is perfectly acceptable to wear short-sleeved European dress shirts to work.”

Liddy adds, “If your office culture allows jeans, pair them with a lightweight blazer. Ties can also be worn more loosely to achieve a great summer look.”

No matter what, both men and women should “resist the urge to dress down for summer,” says Liddy. “Save the strappy sandals for evening and the sports sandals for the weekend.”

(ARA) – If you are like many, you want to find versatile clothing while sticking to a budget. So how do you get the most out of your wardrobe without spending a lot of money? When you need a fashion thrill without the expensive price tag, turn to accessories.

With new accessories you can refresh your current wardrobe and give your outfits a new edge. Pull out a favorite black dress, white shirt, pencil skirt, jeans and suit and see how many different looks you can create with jewelry, watches and handbags. Think of your outfit as a blank canvas and then play with accessories to achieve fresh ensembles.

Here are some accessory fashion trends that will add pizzazz to your wardrobe:

The Classics
Some accessories never go out of style and every woman should have a few classics she can wear year after year. For example, a thin patent belt in black or red, black pumps, diamond earrings, a pearl necklace and a black satchel bag are always en vogue.
Watches are another evergreen accessory that complete an outfit for a polished look. Timex Fashion Trend Director, Amy Goodman, says every woman should have two to three watches at her disposal: one evening or dress style with crystals for a little shine and a sportier, menswear-inspired watch for casual days. A colorful leather watchband is also a nice statement piece that pops when wearing an outfit that is otherwise all one color.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to find a watch that marries function and style. The all-American brand Timex has fabulous options, most under $100. Visit TimexStyle.com for today’s hottest styles.

Modern Trends
Every fashionista delights in playing with trends. Accessories are her best friend as they readily update any look. Some trends that will continue to be big for the next few seasons include:

* Shimmer & Shine — Add jewelry pieces studded with crystals or diamonds to bring your look from day to night. Handbags or shoes with sequins will also add a touch of glamour to a classic outfit.

* Splashes of Color — Every season has a key color. If you’re wearing the ubiquitous black or white outfit, a colorful accessory is a necessity. Blues, corals and pinks have been the rage for a few years now and will continue to color the runway. You cannot go wrong with accessories in these hues as they complement any skin tone.

* Oversized — Think big! Large-frame sunglasses have been in style for several seasons and continue to sizzle among celebrities. Long chunky necklaces, a cocktail ring with a big bauble, oversized cuff bracelets or men’s watches for women are stylish accessories to key into the look. Just remember if you’re going to wear this trend — less is more. So focus on one piece to make a big statement.

When you feel like shopping, look for new accessories to transform your favorite outfits and jazz up others you haven’t worn in a while. Chances are a new pair of shoes, belt, watch or earrings is more affordable than a whole new outfit, and useable in more ways than one.

(ARA) – In harsh economic times, fashion is a luxury often sacrificed to save money. Even with many boutiques and department stores advertising sales, it is difficult to justify spending money on clothing when the cost of food and living is rising steeply.

This is why now, more than ever, is the time to get creative and make do with what we already have in our closets. With inexpensive additions and easy adjustments to items currently in your wardrobe, you can refresh your clothing without emptying your wallet.

Jennifer Shaw, senior design director for the Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. brand offers these simple solutions for spicing up your wardrobe on a budget:

Closet Dive
Pull out old tops, sweaters and blazers you haven’t worn in a while and work them back into your wardrobe rotation. Fashion is cyclical, and you never know when something will come back in style again.

Add Accessories
Inexpensive costume jewelry adds sparkle to a basic black top. Try colorful statement necklaces — the bigger the better — in bright colors or naturals like cork or wood. Funky vintage brooches and bauble rings also steal the show.

Belt it Out
Clothes too big and baggy? Change the shape of a frumpy old sweater by adding a thin belt around your waist. This will liven up the sweater while complimenting your figure.

Layer it On
Extend the life of a summery blouse or sundress throughout the year by layering a cardigan sweater on top and opaque tights or skinny jeans underneath. Pairing with leather boots and a patterned scarf will also help change the season of your summer clothes while still keeping you warm.

My Boyfriend’s Back
Borrow clothes from the man in your life for a fresh look that is comfortably slouchy and undeniably sexy. Pair a men’s v-neck undershirt with cuffed jeans and a chunky necklace for an ultra-feminine accent.

Head-to-Toe Chic
Forget your flats, wearing a cute pair of shoes with a small or medium height heel will instantly lengthen the leg, flatter your figure and add style and glamour to any outfit.

“The key to lasting style is to start with a fitted, basic pair of jeans in a clean, dark wash,” Shaw says. “Jeans with a boot-cut leg opening look great on all different body types and the cut is classic and timeless. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. jeans are fashionable, comfortable and best of all — affordable.”

Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. jeans are available at Walmart and Kmart stores and online for women, men and kids. All styles retail for under $25. Visit www.signaturebylevistrauss.com for more information.

Keep Kids Looking Great on a Budget

(ARA) – How much will you spend on new clothes this fall? According to the U.S. Census, Americans spent $7.5 billion on back-to-school shopping in 2007, or roughly $140 per child. With prices everywhere on the rise in today’s economy, Americans are looking for ways to get more for [...]

(ARA) – How much will you spend on new clothes this fall? According to the U.S. Census, Americans spent $7.5 billion on back-to-school shopping in 2007, or roughly $140 per child. With prices everywhere on the rise in today’s economy, Americans are looking for ways to get more for their money from brand names they know and trust.

Shopping for back-to-school clothes is a proverbial tug-of-war between parents and their kids. Parents want great value from outfits that will last throughout the school year, while kids mostly just want to look “cool.”

From adjustable waistbands to shoes that are two sizes too big, parents are constantly looking for ways to stretch their back to school purchases so boys, especially, won’t outgrow their clothes too quickly.

In Spring 2008, Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. conducted focus groups involving 11 and 12 year old boys and their parents to find the driving factors in buying new jeans for fall. They have to be in style, fit well, and come in a variety of colors with functional details like zippers and cell phone pockets. More than anything else, parents just want to buy what boys like and will actually wear.

“If parents buy jeans their kids will ‘grow in to,’ chances are the jeans will sit in the back of their closet and be forgotten,” says Christine Chun, manager of consumer insights at Levi Strauss & Co. “Boys want to be accepted by their friends and classmates, and this means finding jeans that are stylish and fit well.”

Taking the results of the focus groups to heart, Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. designed boys’ jeans for fall with the durability parents are looking for, and the styles boys want too. Carpenter and loose fit jeans with sturdy construction, a comfortable baggy cut, and secure pockets for carrying anything from rocks to mp3 players are now available at Walmart, Kmart and Target stores. Parents will like the price too; all jeans retail for $15 to $18 each.

Girls on the other hand, tend to care more about what’s in fashion right now, not what will last throughout the year. This can pose an even greater challenge for parents to keep their daughters in style without buying a whole new wardrobe every season. In conjunction with purchasing back to school supplies, which according to the U.S. Census Americans spent over $2.3 billion in fall 2007 at stationary stores, new clothes in the fall are often the only option that fits the family budget.

“A parents’ best bet for girls is to buy a classic five-pocket style jean you can dress up,” says Claire Raiklen, licensing manager at Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. “With cute, feminine details like back pocket stitching, bootcut or flare leg openings, and other unique embellishments – girls will love them and they won’t go out of style.”

Girls jeans are available for under $20 at Kmart and Target stores. Parents can also purchase jeans for themselves for under $20, in traditional straight and relaxed fits for men and fashionable wide-leg trouser styles for women.
(NC)—Even those of us who aren’t particularly fashion-conscious tend to look at our closets come summer with a sense of longing. What can we add to last year’s summer wardrobe to make it appear new and fresh? How can we achieve a designer look on a family budget? Suave (www.homebasics.ca) has combed the runways to find this season’s best fashion trends and put together a game plan for tracking them down on a budget. Happy hunting.

Rake through your family tree for a family member with a great sense of style and a penchant for quality who also tends to be a bit of a pack rat. The closets of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts and in-laws are gold mines for finding stylish vintage clothing whose trends have circled back to spring 2008. With a little digging and cajoling, you can own some of spring’s hottest pieces for the price of tailoring. Look for jackets with oversize collars, long, flowing caftan dresses, head scarves, pencil skirts and sequins.

If you aren’t lucky enough to have a fashionista in your lineage, the next best thing is thrift stores. Vintage designer clothing has become such big business that tried-and-true standbys such as clothing resale stores are tapping into the market. Do your research before heading out, keeping in mind that consignment stores in upscale neighbourhoods tend to offer better finds. Look for white pantsuits, flowy florals in silk jersey or chiffon, vintage lace, knee-length skirts and clutch purses.

Discount chains are doing an increasingly better job in their women’s clothing departments, offering inexpensive versions of some of the season’s hottest styles. The trick is to shop early before the size and selection has been picked over. For spring, that means getting into the store as early as mid-February. Discount stores also offer trendy accessories that can transform an outfit without a big monetary investment. Look for basic tops in spring’s favoured bold colours like orange, rose, purple and green, skinny belts, metallic handbags and sequined ballet flats.

While normally this category is conspicuously avoided when it comes to fashion, there is a spring ‘08 trend that can be done at home: ombré (that’s tie-dye to you and me). This bohemian look was all over the spring runways and is so easy to achieve, even five-year-olds can do it. Start with a stylish, great-fitting basic, such as a slim white tunic T-shirt. Begin with a pale dye on the top, gradually intensifying the colour as you work your way down, or vice versa. The result will be fun and bold and such a great statement there’s no need for accessories.

Designer Christian Dior once said, “Without hats we would have no civilization.” With winter upon us, there is no better time to express your unique style while staying warm under the latest, trendy hats of the season.

“Clothing is a unique expression of self and hats definitely get noticed,” says Susan Lee, hat designer with the Village Hat Shop. “Hats stand out and you can easily change the entire look of an outfit simply by changing your hat. There is no better time than winter to start experimenting with hats.”

Lee offers a heads up about this winter’s hat trends.

Start With the Basics
Berets are hot. High-quality berets are versatile, well made and can be worn all year long. They can be worn in a more traditional “French” style or pulled back to fit on the crown of the head for a more modern look. Traditional berets are made with wool, but the look of a beret can be changed entirely when made from chunky yarns, Angora or even velvet.

Get Artsy
Knit and crochet hats provide warmth with an artisan feel. A popular celebrity accessory of late, the crochet “slouch” hat is an artsy way to hide a bad hair day. Whether the entire hat is crochet or features crochet accessories, a handmade look enhances any outfit.

Indiana Who?
For decades handsome men have sported classic fedoras, but they look great on daring women too. With a brim to tilt and a grosgrain ribbon to dress it up, a fedora can make a woman look mysterious like Marlene Dietrich and make a man look (and feel) like Indiana Jones or Frank Sinatra. A fedora is also a great winter hat as the brim helps keep rain, sleet and snow off the face.

A Soft, French Bell
Making a big comeback is the cloche–the French word for bell and a soft style inspired by hats of the 1920s. This feminine hat can be dressed down in fleece or felt or even dressed up in silk to complement an elegant cocktail dress. Plain or embellished with sequins, feathers or flowers, a cloche adds romance and elegance to every look.

If you’re worried your trendy new hat will leave you with flat hat hair, don’t. If you’re wearing the hat for less than a few hours, take off the hat and add a styling product to reshape your hair. “If you’re wearing the hat for longer than a few hours,” says Lee, “just find one that’s too good to take off then you don’t have to worry about hat hair.”

The Village Hat Shop offers an enormous selection of hats for all seasons and, during their 27 years in business, has won numerous awards and high praise for their customer service and quick turnaround time. For more information about the latest trends in headwear or to purchase your new winter hat, visit www.VillageHatShop.com.

(ARA) – This fall, millions of kids will be returning to school, clad with new backpacks, lunch boxes and a school wardrobe including the latest in teenage-trendy jeans. With all the styles available for the younger set, it can be a challenge for parents to update their own denim wardrobe by finding a great fit that also flatters. “Extreme denim trends come and go, but the need for great-fitting jeans that complement and are comfortable never diminishes,” says Michele Casper, a denim expert at Lands’ End. “As we get older, body shapes change, as do the denim silhouettes that make us look great.”

When buying jeans, there are many factors to consider including wash, fit and all those designer details such as hand sanding and hardware. For those of us who can’t seem to keep up on all the latest denim trends, Casper and the design experts at Lands’ End offer some sage advice on fit and style.

Denim Silhouettes: Clean Lines for a Modern Look

First, consider body shape. Casper recommends that women who are larger on top should look for fuller leg jeans such as a trouser or boot cut. They’ll help create the illusion of a longer leg. For curvy women, wearing a darker wash naturally creates a slimming line to down play fuller thighs and hips. Also, look for jeans cut specifically for curvier women to prevent gapping in the back. For men, keep a more natural silhouette so the fit is in proportion with the body. Casper suggests, “If you’re slim, the Lands’ End original fit is a good choice. It’s slim through the hip and thigh with a straight leg. So, you’ll keep the fit in line with your natural shape, resulting in a modern silhouette and a clean line.” Other silhouettes are available for more athletic builds and relaxed comfort. But, be sure to get a size that fits without appearing overly bulky.

Wearing the Right Wash
Consider the wash and where you plan to wear your jeans. In general, the darker the wash, the dressier it is. “Darker washes are great for professional occasions,” says Casper. “Look for jeans with minimal sandblasting so they look newer and more in line with office attire. You also can dress up darker denim with a blazer or blouse over a cami for a night on the town.” Lighter washes tend to be more casual, say for an afternoon sporting event or weekend with friends.

Denim Details that Make a Difference
There are so many details that go into creating a great pair of jeans. From hammered or molded hardware (you know, those rivets and buttons), to hand sanding and selvage edge seams, this is where denim connoisseurs can play with personality. Casper suggests thinking about denim details that fit.

“If you’re more conservative, think minimal or subtle details. Consider the way the seams are stitched — perhaps a bit wider hem or back flaps on the pockets would work well. If you’re really looking to express your personality, then consider hand-crafted denim with whiskering that mimics natural fading around the front pockets. Also, selvage edge side seams create that ‘railroad track’ fading down the sides over time. This is an authentic detail harking back to the early days of jeans.”

Lands’ End, a perennial favorite among families, has redesigned their fall denim collection for kids and adults with updated classic pieces for a variety of tastes. To view their collection, visit www.landsend.com or call (800) 800-5800 to request a catalog.

A proper fit can make all the difference between looking sharp or simply disheveled. For petite and plus sizes, the challenge can be even greater. Some apparel designers simply do math, increasing or decreasing clothing measurements by a certain percentage without taking proper proportion into consideration. The result can be shapeless silhouettes that look frumpy, not flattering.

The experts at Lands’ End offer some advice on getting a great fit.

Know Your Measurements
The key to a proper fit is knowing your measurements. The average woman is 5’4” and weighs 164 pounds according to the National Center for Health Statistics — not your typical runway model. Look for designers that offer clothing specifically for your size.

Take the time to measure your body with a proper measuring tape — a dimensionally stable cloth tape measure — keeping the tape taut but not stretched. Get a friend to help, if possible, measuring your body over properly fitting undergarments while standing erect, without shoes, and with feet approximately six inches apart. For consistency, take all measurements from the same side of the body. Measure your height, bust or chest, arm, waist, rise, hip and inseam.

Keep it Proportional
If you are petite or plus size, look for clothing that is in proportion to your measurements. Plus sizes should look for shapely, flattering styles — not styles you hide behind. For petites, consider the way a pant leg drapes or tapers. If it doesn’t fit well in the hips or the leg is too wide, it can distort your appearance.

Don’t Forget the Details
Details can play an important role in proportion. Print and pattern sizes, button sizes and back pocket sizes are all elements that play with proportion that can make you appear larger or smaller. Look for details that are in proportion to your body. Or, see how certain details play with your body shape. Proper hemming is important. Know your inseam and be sure your hem lengths flatter your legs. Lands’ End hems and cuffs pants for free.

Forget the Titles, Get the Right Size
Regular, petite and plus sizes are just categories. Forget the titles and buy what works for you. Regular sizes are, on average, for women with heights between 5’4” and 5’7”. Petite sizes typically start at heights 5’3” and lower. Plus sizes start at 16W and above. Be open to shopping beyond your normal category to try sizes that work for your unique measurements.

Superior Shoes
Our feet are in shoes for countless hours each day. It is very important to get the right fit and not just style. Ask any doctor; improperly fitting shoes can lead to health problems down the road. If you have wide feet, be sure to seek out these styles, especially for kids. Their growing feet deserve a good fit. Lands’ End has often hard-to-find wide widths for both kids and adults in a variety of styles.

Kids Comfort
Kids grow at different rates and in different proportions. It’s important for parents to take their kid’s measurements each year. You might find that a regular size won’t work this year or that your child needs plus sizes after a recent growth spurt.

SIDEBAR:How To Measure For The Right Fit

Be confident that the size you select is the size that will fit. The key to a proper fit is knowing your measurements.

* Bust/Chest: With arms relaxed down at sides, measure fullest part of bust/chest, keeping tape parallel to the floor.
* Arm: Bend arm to 90 degrees. Place hand on hip. Start at center back of neck, measure across the shoulder to the elbow and down to the wrist.
* Waist: Measure around your waist, where you normally wear your pants — keep tape a bit loose.
* Rise: Start the tape at your natural back waist, run the tape between your legs, pulling comfortably at the crotch and up to your natural waist.
* Hip: Stand with heels together, keeping tape straight and parallel to the floor. Measure around fullest part.
* Height: Stand in stocking feet, with feet together, back to a wall. Measure from crown of head to the floor.
* Inseam: Take a pair of pants that fit you well. Lay them flat. Measure from the crotch seam to bottom of pants. Number of inches (to nearest 1/2) = inseam length.
* Belts: Measure over waistband of your best-fitting pants, running tape measure under belt loops.

Summer is a great time for outdoor activities, many of which require swimming attire. Women often find themselves dreading this time of year because they are not satisfied with how their swimsuit fits or makes them look. The problem is they don’t have the right swimsuit for their body.

“Everyone can be self confident during swimsuit season no matter what body type they have,” says Donnamarie Mazzola of Cyberswim.com, a swimwear Web site specializing in Miraclesuit swimwear. “There are easy ways to draw attention to or away from different aspects of your body that will flatter your shape and make you feel your best.”

Here are some tips to follow to get the swimsuit you want and look great this summer:

* Internet

Don’t limit yourself to only what is in the stores. Size selection and inventory is often limited and it can be hard to find the styles that work best for your unique figure, especially if you need a hard to find size like a D or DD cup swimsuit, or plus size swimwear. Try a Web site like Cyberswim.com that guides users through a variety of swimsuit styles so they can find the swimsuit solution for their problem areas. Plus shopping online is private and once you receive your suit, you can try it on in the privacy of your own home, and return it if it doesn’t fit or flatter.

* Fabric

One of the most important factors to consider when swimsuit shopping is the suit’s material. This is something that is often overlooked. Lycra Spandex is the component of the fabric that provides the shaping and holding power, so the more Lycra Spandex, the more control. Look for the amount of Lycra Spandex in the suit, and if possible, how the fabric is made; typically it is 10 to 12 percent.

For example, if you look at Miraclesuit swimsuits, they contain as much as 30-50 percent Lycra, often over three times the amount in other suits. This is very unique when compared to other suits, which have a lower Lycra Spandex content and rely on inner girdle-like panels for control. This fabric is specially created to have a four-way stretch factor, not simply the common two-way stretch. This provides control plus added lift and support.

* Identify

In order to find a great swimsuit you need to look at your body and identify what you want to minimize or accentuate. Remember, what the eye focuses on or skips past determines the swimsuit benefits.

For example, to minimize the waist, trick the eye to pass over this area or travel toward the middle of the waistline, rather than outward to the edges. Look for styles with empire waists and diagonal lines. To minimize the bust, focus the eye away from the widest part of the bust with wider or double straps and/or stripes above or below. To accentuate the bust, the eye should focus on this area. Look for suits that reveal more skin, have padding, or even jewelry or embellishments at the bust.

* Style

A flattering swimsuit with control is not usually found in the bikini. But you can be just as stylish and fun with a variety of other options. One-piece swimsuits compliment and provide a wide range of style options. Tankinis are great for those who want a two piece option without showing a lot of skin. They are also great for those who need a different size on top versus on the bottom.

Color and design are important elements as well. Darker colors tend to be more subtle. If you do want to incorporate a design, try having the top of the swimsuit, or top piece of the tankini have the pattern, keeping the bottom clean and simple. This has a slimming effect and brings the eyes upward.

“The bottom line is there are swimsuits out there that flatter every woman. By following these principles and looking for figure flattering, supportive and slimming swimsuits like the Miraclesuit line, you can find one you’re sure to love. And who doesn’t want to enjoy summer a little bit more?”
